Popular Rodeo Terms

Rodeos are a lot of fun to be in and watch. There are certain phrases that are used specifically for rodeos. Here are a few of our favorite examples. Enjoy:

1. Suicide Wrap - A suicide wrap is what bull riders use. They use a wrap around their hand to tie it to their bull rope. Suicide wraps are just that - suicidal, since it is very hard to get loose of their wraps once cowboys are bucked off their animal. That is why suicide wraps are not allowed in most rodeos.

2. Pulling Leather - Cowboys pull leather when they hold on to the saddle horn. Cowboys do this to prevent from being thrown off their horse. This is also commonly known as grabbing the apple.

3. Dragger or Trotter - A dragger or trotter is a term used for a steer. A dragger is a steer that stops running once it is roped in a rodeo. Trotters trot around the grounds instead of running, and hang their heads.

4. Crow Hop - Ever see a horse jump with its legs straight? That is a crow hop. Horses that jump with stiff legs usually aren't trying as hard to buck off their cowboy. Another term for this is frog walking.

5. Lasso - A lasso is a popular rodeo knot. Cowboys use braided rodeo ropes, known as lariat, for their events. A lasso is a lariat that has a special knot that cowboys use that tightens once it is over the steer's head.

6. Fanning - Fanning happens when a cowboy uses their hat to fan a rodeo animal. Cowboys remove their cowboy hat and wave them over the stock animal once they are done riding it. It usually is seen as an insult because the cowboy is saying the animal was too easy a ride.

7. Arm Jerker - Ever wonder what cowboys call the meanest bulls out there? They call it an arm jerker. Arm jerker is a term used to describe a powerful rodeo animal with a lot of bucking power and energy.
